The role of play therapy in the treatment of autism

18 Jun 2020
Play is interaction with others in the form of cooperation and competition in the form of communication to ask for the needs and understanding of others. This is the general concept of play therapy.

Do not underestimate the power of the game. In play therapy, structures and rules can be considered. These structures are powerful tools that help develop and correct children's motor, communication and social skills. For example, horseback riding can have many good therapeutic benefits for autistic children.

The beauty of play therapy is that it does not always require the presence of professional therapists, but a coach, parents, siblings, friends and caregivers can use play therapy methods to create therapeutic benefits at home and on the playground.

There are two types of play therapy: direct and indirect.

Indirect play therapy:
It is a type of game that has little structure and rules. This model of play is for a time when the child has to face fewer boundaries and rules in order to be able to deal with his own problems. Direct play therapy has a more guiding approach, and the therapist often engages directly with the child and can have comments and suggestions, even changing the course of the session. Indirect methods are often used at the beginning of play therapy sessions. In this way, the child can first choose his favorite activity, then the session begins with a therapist who forces the child to choose a new toy, request and communicate in different ways. The session gradually leads to direct play therapy. Play therapy focuses on the individual needs of the child and the play session is designed to suit those needs. Game methods are also designed and adjusted from session to session and from child to child.

Can I play games with my child at home?

As a parent, you play an important role in your child's play therapy. You can also take an active part in play therapy sessions. Of course, many play therapists are willing and able to teach play therapy techniques to parents. There are also many video programs and books that help parents with play therapy at home.

The most important things to remember when playing therapy at home ...

Always be enthusiastic about your child's activities.
Comment on what he is doing, even if he does not continue the conversation.
Try to reflect and imitate your child as a way to help him feel more secure and comfortable in the game.
Apply simple and small activities in the game. If you are playing with a car and your child is driving his car, make a sound like the sound of a car.
Remember that all this is in stages so do not put pressure on your child.
Play therapy can be a great opportunity to interact and build a relationship with your child as a way to develop valuable social skills.
