Children with autism spectrum disorder are at risk for malnutrition

24 Sep 2020
Children aged three to six years with this disorder were compared with their normal peer group as well as with the control group of the same age and gender to assess their food intake and body mass index. Using a three-day nutrition report completed by parents, food intake was compared with baseline intakes. The percentage of total malnutrition in the autism spectrum disorder group was 342.5% compared to their normal age group. The growing trend of malnutrition in the autism spectrum disorder group compared to its peer group was 363% compared to 283.2%. Despite malnutrition, the body mass index was higher in the autism spectrum disorder group compared to its peer group. As a result, children with autism spectrum disorder suffer from malnutrition despite having a higher body mass index.
